Finding your passion can lead to a successful business.

Finding your passion can take time. But when you find it, often it can lead to the business of your dreams. That’s what happened for Daniela. She shares how her passion for writing has led to a successful business that lets her work from home and still spend time with her kids.

1. Tell me about your yourself.

Finding your passion can turn into a successful business, just like Daniela here. My name is Daniela, wife and mom of one from Malta. Before Content Mama, and before my baby daughter turned into an energetic toddler, I was a diplomat stationed both abroad and in the capital. I love to write; becoming a mom made me realise more how much of a passion I have for books and writing. Favorite snack is chocolate. Who doesn’t love chocolate? A healthier option would be mango. I love it!

2. What is your business?

I’m the founder of Content Mama, a boutique venture offering content writing and proofreading services aimed at individuals and SMEs.

3. How long have you been working with your business?

Content Mama was launched one evening at the end of 2016 when my toddler gratefully opted for an early night.

4. Why did you want to work from home or work for yourself? What is your “why”?

My why is my daughter. My job back then required a tough commute – super early mornings and late evenings. I was away from her for fourteen hours at a stretch, even if I was only working part time. Days at the office meant that I only saw my daughter at bedtime.

5. Why did you start this business?

I love writing and have been proofreading for friends for years. I also pursued a writing diploma when I was still at school and my dream was always to be a writer. My daughter’s birth just made me realise that this was indeed what I should be doing.

6. How many hours do you work every week? What kinds of things do you do to make money?

I usually work around 20 to 30 hours per week and my working day involves a whole lot of writing.

7. How long did it take to see your first sale? How long did it take to make a profit?

Luckily, in this field, expenses are low so it’s easy to make a profit if you price your time wisely. I started with some small projects soon after starting Content Mama – eventually these turned into more long-term projects.

9. What do you like best about your business?

The flexibility it allows – I can still be there for morning hugs and cuddles following naps. I also love that I get to use my writing skills on a daily basis.

10. What kinds of expectations should someone new to working from home or working for yourself have?

As with any kind of work, it can be tough at times. Regardless of the fact that you’ll be working from home, help with the kids is a must. Being your own boss also tends to involve working at all hours – differentiating between work and leisure is not so straightforward, especially when there’s always something else to be done. I find that taking work outside the home for a few hours a week helps for a change of scene and also acts as a productivity boost. Do not expect too much out of yourself – divide the work to be done in doable chunks. That way, at the end of the day, you will be proud of what you achieved and not stressed out because you didn’t get ‘anything’ done.

11. How can someone connect with you?

Find me on Facebook, or email me at Content Mama.  My personal blog is Faery Ode.
