1. Tell me about your yourself.
I was born in Scotland and moved to Hamilton when I was 5 with my parents. I have lived here ever since (I wont tell you how many years). And I have been married for almost 17 years to a boy I had a crush on in grade 7, and we have a 14 year old son, Liam. My husband is a Massage Therapist (and sings in a band…I know, I’m a lucky girl) and we own a Wellness Clinic here in Hamilton. I ran our business with his sister since it opened in 1999, and 10 years ago, we branched off and started running Massage Therapy Conferences here and in the US with 2 other partners. That’s still something I do that doesn’t take a lot of my time but that I LOVE doing!Hockey is a HUGE part of our family. My son plays on 2 teams and my husband plays “old timers” pick up. The Toronto Maple Leafs ARE going to win the cup this year or next!! Fun Fact: Before I had my son I used to teach Cardio Kickboxing on the side for 3 years and was a lead girl in a Kickbox exercise Video…”Kickbox 2000″! THAT was my 15 minutes of fame!
2. What is your business?
I am a Director for Thirty-One Gifts. We offer fashionable accessories and organizational and storage solutions for you, your home and your family. 80% of our items can be personalized so we truly are an incredible Gifting company.
3. How long have you been working with your company?
I joined 3 years ago JUST to get the kit (it was too great a deal to pass up) and spent 1 year really just ordering for myself and some friends, I hate to pay full price right? 1 year in, I learned about our career path and the opportunities available, whether it be income, earning free product, earning free trips and I learned all about it and knew this is a company I wanted to invest myself in and be able to help other women succeed in their own businesses. I am a Director, the first level of leadership, which accounts for about 3% of the company’s consultants, and I earn 28% commission on my personal sales and 3% sales bonus on my team’s sales. These numbers can fluctuate immensely but everyone starts at 25% commission plus bonuses for the first 4 months!
4. Why did you want to work from home and work for yourself?
I have basically been self employed for years and I do love working from home…I am easily distracted by my surroundings. In the beginning, this “job” was about making money with an incredible company. After seeing some of the opportunities it gave women, the lives that were changed because of it, and the charities we helped, my “why” became offering this opportunity to every woman that could either use the extra income, use the “sisterly” support that we always find, use some time away from being a “mom” and just being herself, or time to meet new people and become a little more independent. It fills my cup to hear the changes in other women’s lives because of our gracious company.
5. Why did you pick this business? Did you look at any other businesses? Have you tried any others before this one?
I didn’t choose this business as a business, I chose the products because I loved them, the business aspect came later. BUT I did dissect the compensation plan to see what the financial potential was for me. I had joined a network marketing company years ago but didn’t like the “auto ship” feature that makes so many people feel sucked into a “pyramid”. This is just like an online catalog company with incredible products to help you make your life a little easier!
6. How many hours do you work every day/week? What kinds of things do you do to make money?
I am always “working” my business from my phone or always just being available. Actual sit-down time at my computer is probably 10-15 hours a week plus any event or party time. We are given a replicated website so just sending your link to people can gather sales for you. We can do home parties, catalog parties, online/Facebook parties, vendor events, we can collect individual orders, our FUNDRAISING program is incredible too. Also, we earn FREE product for the first 4 months with an average party each month. Consultants regularly earn sales bonuses from our home office too. RIGHT NOW is our 15th year anniversary, so each month is a chance to earn a sales bonus.
7. What do you like best about your business?
I love the sisterhood. Women can be so harsh on each other, and rarely lift each other up, but the women of Thirty-One encourage and support each other, no matter what the situation or surroundings. This is a true testament to what an amazing company we work for. They have never let us down and always made things right if there was an issue.
8. How would someone start a business with your team?
You start by enrolling as a consultant and you immediately make 25% of all sales. You need to find a great leader, find her website and your enrollment is done online. Our regular kit is $115 and includes over $400 worth of product and business supplies to get you started. If you have doubts or decide you just cannot manage, or maybe that you want to do it on a very part time basis, Thirty-One lets you keep your kit with no added fees or charges….it’s really incredible. To stay as an active consultant and continue to make 25% on all sales, your commitment is $200 in sales every rolling 3 months…super easy! Sometimes we offer a “mini” enrollment kit that can be $40-$70, or sometimes we offer a $1 ENROLLMENT!! This just gets you started as an active consultant without any products but you can earn those easily.
9. What do you do to help your new team members succeed?
I have a structured plan I work at with all of my new team members. I currently have a team of 64. Everyone gets a welcome email that has all of my contact info and some steps to get started and things to read through. Our company gives us access to an online portal with training materials, videos, graphics, so even if you enrolled with someone who is not yet a leader, you could succeed in this business. I always chat by phone, find out her “why” or her plan, and immediately ask her to set up her launch party to get a good start. We also have a team Facebook page that is encouraging and supportive. This is my full time gig and I take pride in my actions and training system. BUT if you just want to be a casual seller, I appreciate that too and will help you succeed at that.
10. What kinds of expectations should someone new to the business have?
I always let girls know that the income is in their control. It’s 25% to start on all sales. You can work your business 4 hours a month, 4 hours a week or 4 hours a day and your paycheck will reflect that
11. Anything else you would like someone to know about you or your business?
Thirty-One was named after Proverbs 31 about the Virtuous Woman. Our owner wanted to start a company to help women become more independent and make a contribution to her family. Everything about our company is based on 12 core values that truly get portrayed though our sales team and consultants. The retention of our home office staff is incredible, and they celebrate our accomplishments any chance they get.
